How to create good unique restaurant names

Follow these tips to create unique restaurant names that will keep customers flocking to your business:

  • List the words that describe the unique qualities of your restaurant.
  • On the other side of the paper, list the words or images that first come to mind when you hear each of those words.
  • Force map each word on the first list to each word on the second list. If there’s any you like in any way, keep it for further development.
  • Use a first name. Consider naming your restaurant after yourself or a relative with a unique name. Add the first name to the list of names you like from the previous step. If you, your relatives, or business partners have a short, unique name that is not a first name, you can use that too.
  • You can also add any of the following words to make the full restaurant name: Bar, Beanery, Bistro, Buffet, Café, Eatery, Grill, Pie, Place, Pizza, Restaurant, Station, Steakhouse, and Supper Club.
  • Use your favorite fantasy or fiction character’s name. If you are a sci-fi or fantasy aficionado, this may be the inspiration you are looking for. E.g., Wonka Crackers. Please ensure you do not use a name that is too hard to pronounce or out-of-touch for your customers. Except your customers are the geeky types, in which case, your name may serve as a competitive advantage.
  • If your restaurant has a cultural or regional cuisine, you can incorporate it into the restaurant name. For example, French Fries can become French Fires or Malala’s Masala.
  • You can also use the transliteration of words you would like your restaurant to represent. For example, “Love Nest” becomes “Nid D’Amour” from the French, and “Soups” becomes “Aro Obe” from Yoruba.
  • Use a register from your unique interests to name your restaurant. For example, “quantum entanglement” can produce the names “The Entanglement” and “Quantum Folds.”
  • Look for a way to make the name rhyme, e.g., Five Highs Restaurant.
  • Replace city/street names in the list above with your city/street name and see which of the new names you like the most.
  • Force map any item on your list to the list of unique restaurant names in this article and see if you can generate even more unique names.

Please, note that if you are changing the name of a restaurant that is already running, you have to consider what the restaurant stands for and if you want to retain that persona following the change of name. If not, you want to be clear about what you want the new persona of the restaurant to signify and how to transition between the two.

You can also ask for suggestions from your customers and use their suggestions as you deem fit.

Looking forward to the awesome names you come up with!
