But before we get into it, let’s take a look at a brief overview of the movie.
We all know the popular Disney movie “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” But, what if I told you that the famous movie we all know is the third recreation of the script.
The first publication of Snow White was in 1812 in the Grimm’s Fairy Tales collection by the Grimm brothers. However, in this tale, the dwarfs didn’t have names.
A hundred years later, Winthrop Ames, in 1912, produced a Broadway Play of Snow White and the Dwarfs. And as you would rightly guess, they had names. Their names were Blick, Flick, Glick, Plick, Snick, Whick, and Quee (But why not Quick? I guess the person who did the naming was trying to pull a fast one on us).
Now, fast forward to 25 years later. Disney took Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to a whole different level to create his first animated movie in 1937. It took about three years to produce the movie, and the cost of production was $1.5 million, even though the initial budget was just $250,000. That’s a whole lot of money right there. But it’s a good thing it all paid off to become a hit.
I think one key thing that contributed to the movie’s success was Walt’s decision to rename the dwarfs. Looking at the characters, the witch who was the villain, Snow White was sweet but didn’t have enough charisma to keep the audience glued, the Prince was cool but only featured briefly. And that leaves us with the Seven Dwarfs. And that was why Walt decided to rename the Dwarfs to portray their personalities.
Ok, enough of the history, let’s get into the core of this article.
